Dr. Tam Answers Your Eyecare Questions
Can diabetes be seen during an eye exam?
Diagnosis is usually from a routine physical with blood tests, but those who don’t get a check up will notice frequent urination, thirst, hunger, fatigue and blurry vision. The blurry vision is from the blood sugar elevation in the eyes changing the refraction to more myopic or near sighted vision. This vision fluctuates with the blood sugar levels. More severe cases can lead to blindness. It is important to have the eyes dilated and evaluated for leakages of blood or fluids. If there are enough changes, a retinal surgeon can use laser photocoagulation to help stop the leakages. All of this is monitored with a routine eye exam. So if you know of anyone who needs a diabetic eye check, have them see me.
